Snezhinsk
Manufacturing of Waterproof Pipes
Practical Outcomes of Project Realization

Title

Development of Production of Heat-insulated and Waterproof Pipes in Snezhinsk.
Objectives

- To increase the range of products. The items to be produced will be partly used in the company's own production process and partly sold to other organizations.

- To increase the sales volume through production and sale of new product items.

- To decrease the prime cost of the product (heat-insulated and waterproof pipes) by using the company's own products as component parts and involving recoverable resources (polyethylene) in production.

- To solve the problem of recycling the polyethylene waste, whose share is 10-15 vol. % of a polyethylene pipe (casing) produced.

- To create 18 new high-skill jobs (in addition to the 29 positions available), 55% of which will be assigned to former RFNC-VNIITF employees.
Summary

Snezhinsk Company for Energy Saving Technologies (SCEST) is an established company that produces ready insulated pipes that are used to transfer hot water and steam.

SCEST was established in 2002 with the help of a grant from the US-RF NCI programme and, as a result, development of the pipe in pipe technology was completed. Thereafter CNCP agreed a new project to take the technology one step further and to increase the market share of the product through some simple additions. The project helped SCEST to increase its market share and penetration.

The new project was to develop:

  • An outer galvanized casing that can be wrapped over the polyethylene pipe to allow the final assembly to be completely weatherproof and not be damaged by sunlight, for use when the pipe comes above ground. The same galvanized spiral wrap can also be used for air conditioning ducting providing a second sales opportunity for SCEST.
  • Recovering waste polyethylene from the manufacture of the outer pipe for the production of granules for recycling, this will provide waste free production reducing the cost of the final product.

Final audit proved that the Beneficiary fulfilled most of its obligations. Job creation was over fulfilled (20 jobs /15 for former employees of VNIITF created vs 18/10 planned).

The project has been completed successfully.

Cost

Total cost of the project is £218,290. The DECC's contribution is £110,000.
