Utilization of nuclear submarines
Practical Outcomes of Project Realization

Title

Water-jet cutting technologies for utilization of nuclear submarines and other industrial applications.
Objectives

- Application of water-jet cutting technologies for commercial civil orders.

- Development and test of a set of equipment for water-jet cutting to dismantle nuclear and other submarines.

- Development and test of a set of equipment for water-jet cutting with the use of robot-manipulator.
Summary

VNIITF (Snezhinsk) developed a method of cutting steel using high-pressure water jets. This is considered to have the potential to be used in cutting up the hulls of nuclear submarines within the framework of the Nuclear Legacy Programme, as well as wider commercial applications. An initial proposal for support for a commercial appraisal was approved by the May 2004 Steering Group. The project was approved for full funding at the November 2004 SG meeting.

Final audit proved that the beneficiary fulfilled all of their obligations. All the planned new jobs were created (40 jobs /40 for ex-nuclear workers). The project is considered to have been completed successfully.
