Practical Outcomes of project "Establish a laboratory for the manufacture of sophisticated prescription lenses"
This project was initiated in 2006 by Uraloptik (Snezhinsk).
It is claimed that every second Russian citizen experiences problems with his or her vision.
Glasses are the most convenient and most widely used system for correcting sight. Today, more
and more emphasis is being placed on stylistic features, a fact which has considerably
improved the commercial potential of the sector. In the course of the last few years, demand
for complex prescription lenses has been increasing, and also for lenses prepared to
individual order which incorporate modern design features addressing the individual needs of
the particular customer. When it was established, Uraloptic basically concentrated on selling
various kinds of spectacles wholesale. Commercial partnerships were established in the
Chelyabinsk, Orenburgh, Kurgan and Tumen regions and with the Republic of Bashkortostan. The
CNCP project supported the logical development of the company in this direction. The overall
cost of the project was £ 302,000, of which £ 195,000 was provided by CNCP.
Nineteen jobs were created for highly qualified workers.
In addition to helping the company to develop, and to its usefulness to Snezhinsk in
general, the project was remarkable in that it managed to succeed in the face of intense
competition from ready made, off the shelf, lenses imported from China. While the majority
of these imports were of low quality, they also sold at lower prices, which undoubtedly was a
serious factor in the minds of purchasers. Despite this, and not to mention the problems
created by the crisis of 2008, Uraloptic not only succeeded in riding the storm, but
achieved remarkable success in taking control of its market niche.
