The Annual Study Tours to Great Britain

CNCP programme organises study tours to the UK on themes such as the Commercialisation of Science and Technology and the Creation of Sustainable Businesses. The main aim of the study tours is to enable senior managers and specialists from nuclear research centres directly involved in putting R&D into practice, to learn from the British experience of commercialisation leading to the formation of new businesses. Twice a year, groups of senior representatives of former Soviet nuclear weapons establishments visit leading universities, research institutes and defence establishments to meet technology transfer and business start-up specialists.

The main areas discussed during study tours:

  • The creation of new sustainable jobs for scientists and specialists of nuclear complex;
  • The management of large research facilities;
  • The identification and evaluation of new technologies;
  • Intellectual property rightsь;
  • Risk assessment and risk management around the introduction of new technologies;
  • The development and management of spin-out companies;
  • Shareholders and their benefits in high-tech R&D commercialisation;
  • The motivation of scientific personnel involved in commercialisation processes;
  • Personnel training and culture change;
  • British governmental policy regarding scientific commercialisation.

  Study tour "Development of local economies faced with substantial restructuring", 11-18 September 2011

The study tour was focused on how one particular area of the UK, West Cumbria, has engaged in a long term regeneration programme to diversify the local economic and reduce its dependence on Sellafield, the UK's major nuclear reprocessing site where over 10,000 are employed.

  Study tour to the UK, 6-13 March 2011

«Examples of Technology Commercialisation from Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and London» is the theme of the annual study visit to Great Britain for representatives of CNCP partner organisations from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. Participants also include the President of the Academy of Science of the Republic of Uzbekistan, together with representatives of the National Innovation Fund of Kazakhstan and of the Academy of Science of Ukraine.

  Study tour "Development of local economies faced with substantial restructuring", 31 October - 7 November 2010

The main objective of the tour was development of activity directions and solution of issued discussed during the VIII CNCP Conference in Vyborg - keeping main CNCP functions after 2012 and opportunities for funding these initiatives. In the course of the tour there were studied examples of how a relatively isolated region of England - Western Cumbria - started implementation of the long-term programme of its economic regeneration, diversification of the local economy and reduction of its dependency on Sellafield - the largest enterprise handling spent nuclear fuel. The participants of the tour visited the Yorkshire site of the Welding Institute (TWI), Research Centre of Advanced Nuclear technologies, Industrial Site of Sellafield, National Nuclear Laboratory (Sellafield), Science and Technology Park Westlakes and Land Rover plant in Solihull.


  Study tour "Radiation medical technologies of the United Kingdom", October 2010

From 25 to 29 October a study tour "Radiation medical technologies of the United Kingdom" was arranged by CNCP for representatives of the nuclear industry of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. The tour programme included a visit to the Harwell nuclear site, where over 4,500 people are employed in 80 commercial structures. Among them is Isotron Ltd., the main supplier of commercial services in radiation treatment (medical sterilization) in Europe. Also, the participants visited the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, Centre for Diagnostics and Treatment of Cancer, Centre of Nuclear Medicine and National Physical Laboratory.

On 23-30 May 2010 a study tour to the UK was organized for the representatives from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The aims - enabling senior managers and specialists from nuclear research centres, ministries and academies of science, to learn from the British experience of commercialisation leading to the formation of new businesses.

  Study Tour to Great Britain, 22-28 February 2009

Senior representatives of CNCP partner institutes in Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan visited Great Britain as part of a study tour organized by the Programme. The basic aim of the visit was to promote exchange of experience in the sphere of the commercialization of technology-based innovations and the creation of innovation infrastructure.

  CNCP organized a visit to the British and European Scientific Centre at Culham for top-management of the Kazakhstan National Nuclear Centre, Kurchatov, July 2008

From July 20-28, 2008, CNCP organized a visit to the British and European Scientific Centre at Culham for top-management of the Kazakhstan National Nuclear Centre (City of Kurchatov). The main goals of the tour were to get acquainted with the JET and MAST tokamaks, and to discuss technical and organizational areas of potential cooperation.

A study Tour on Commercialisation of Science and Technology was held from 10th-17th February 2008. The main goal of the Study Tour was to give top managers from nuclear research institutes and specialists involved in the commercialisation of scientific and R&D an opportunity to explore British experience in developing effective commercialisation and in setting-up successful companies. The delegation included representatives of nuclear institutes from Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Belarus.

  The study tour to the United Kingdom, February 2007

Between 18-26 February 2007, one such tour took place, attended by 12 representatives of nuclear centres from Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine. The itinerary was designed to include several companies which manage large research units, R&D centres in British Universities, and companies engaged in the commercialisation of high-tech inventions.

  Study Tour to Great Britain "Downsizing of Nuclear Facilities and Guarantee of Sustainable Employment - British Experience", October 2006

A Study Tour to Great Britain was organized for leaders of closed nuclear cities from 15 to 22 October 2006. Its aim was to look at the "Downsizing of large nuclear, defence and research facilities and sustainable employment". Those taking part were the Heads of administration and managers of production at ZATO Seversk and Snezhinsk, the Head of Ozersk city district, representatives responsible for economic development of ZATO Sarov and Zheleznogorsk, Directors of VNIIEF, VNIITF, the Mining Chemical Combinat in Zheleznogorsk, PO "Mayak" and representatives of Rosatom and CNCP.
