Gem colouration
Title

Gem colouration through neutron and gamma irradiations.
Objectives

- To establish a facility at INP for changing the colour of gemstones using neutron and gamma irradiations.

- To create in addition 30 a new workplaces, including 17 workplaces for former weapon scientist employees of INP.
Summary

The existing INP facilities required adaptation to process production quantities (tons) of gemstones:

  • Purchase of new sources to upgrade the gamma irradiation facility.
  • Purchase of new equipment to handle the throughput of gemstones required.
  • Provision of a secure room in which to store the gemstones during the manufacturing process.
  • Precisely define the irradiation and other conditions required to achieve marketable colours.
  • Confirm that the gemstones will not fade.
  • Finalise commercial contracts with the two companies already identified.

The Beneficiary fulfilled their obligations in full and overfulfilled their obligations in what concerns new jobs creation. 30 jobs were created / of which 30 are for the ex-weapon staff, 30/17 jobs were planned initially.

The project is considered to have been completed successfully.

Cost

Total cost of the project is £ 279,400. The DECC's contribution is £ 59,557.
