Ukraine, Kharkov
Establishment of a Laboratory for Nuclear Spectroscopy
Title

Establishment of a Certified Laboratory for Nuclear Spectroscopy and Radiation Control.
Objectives

- To set up a laboratory to carry out radiation surveys and measurements.

- To create 5 permanent jobs, including 3 jobs for KIPT staff.
Summary

The aim of this project is to assist KIPT to set up a laboratory to carry out radiation surveys and measurements to enable customers to demonstrate that their products and materials meet regulatory specifications concerning the levels of radioactive elements and contamination. Preliminary research indicates that in Ukraine a number of industry sectors, in particular building and construction, food industry, medicine, customs, as well as the nuclear sector are required to ensure that their products and materials comply with national standards concerning the levels of radionuclides contained in them. There are a number of laboratories within Ukraine who can provide measuring and monitoring services, but they rely on ageing equipment, which has limited sensitivity to some of the key radionuclides. KIPT have the key expert skills and some of the equipment required to set up an accredited dosimetry laboratory, which would provide a more comprehensive service. They intend to set up this service to provide both laboratory and on-site measurements.
