Kazakhstan, Kurchatov
Accredited Laboratory for Radiochemical Analysis
Title

Accredited Laboratory for Radiochemical Analysis.
Objectives

- To establish an accredited laboratory for carrying out commercial radiochemical analysis at Kurchatov.

- To create 25 permanent jobs, including 15 former weapons specialists.
Summary

One of the key activities of IRSE is assessing the suitability of land within the Semipalatinsk area, previously contaminated during the FSU weapons testing programme, for commercial use. At the moment, IRSE has identified more than 10 industrial organizations and a number of agricultural organizations in its neighbouring region which require these services. In the future, they believe they will be able to offer similar services across the Republic of Kazakhstan. At the moment there is little competition in this area since certification of these products requires sophisticated nuclear spectrometry and skilled radiochemical analysis. Accreditation of the laboratory will further strengthen the competitive advantage of the laboratory and increase the barriers for new competitors.

The Government is tightening its requirements for laboratories carrying out this type of work and it is now necessary for all of the measuring equipment to be appropriately calibrated and that laboratories are accredited. IRSE needs to update their working practices and procedures and prepare the necessary documents for accreditation of their laboratory.

Beneficiary has overfulfilled its obligations. Job creation was over fulfilled: 25 jobs /25 for former employees of IRSE created (vs.25/15 planned).

Cost

The DECC's contribution is £ 25,000.
