The Kazakhstan Government is currently planning to fund the construction of a Nuclear Medicine Centre
in Almaty. INP have carried out a detailed feasibility study to look at the design and costs of
constructing a nuclear medical centre as well as the opportunities for the provision of nuclear
medicine in Kazakhstan.
The main activities planned are:
- complex diagnostics using radioisotope imaging and other techniques;
- treatment of patients with radiopharmaceuticals;
- training of nuclear medicine personnel for Kazakhstan clinics;
- production of a wide spectrum of isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals;
- development and testing of new radiopharmaceuticals;
- research and development in nuclear medicine and related fields;
- radiation sterilization of medical products.
Preliminary work established relations between Kazakh staff and key staff in the Nuclear Medicine Centre at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals. The project aims to further develop this network; to provide expert advice and assistance to INP during the development of the Nuclear Medicine Centre at Alatau; and to help provide training and development of Kazakh staff. When operational, the centre is expected to provide (direct and indirect) jobs for 150 former weapons scientists. CNCP already supports (and is considering further proposals) concerning the development of industrial capabilities at INP in manufacturing isotopes for medical applications.
The 2010-11 NIS UK Study Tour involved a further visit to the Oxford NHS Nuclear Medicine Centre. Representatives of INP Alatau attended the Technology Partnering Seminar which was held in Tbilisi in October 2010.
