INP has a reactor in which isotopes including Ir-92, Sb-124, Cd-109, and Co-60 can be manufactured. The Institute also has facilities where they can manufacture sealed sources. The purpose of this project was to develop these facilities so that they could sell the sources for industrial and medical applications.
To achieve this the following tasks were carried out:
- establish organisation for industrial production of sealed radionuclide sources;
- refurbish the active handling facilities and associated facilities to make possible commercial production of sealed sources;
- carry out pilot production runs to enter the market for sealed radionuclide sources in the home market of Kazakhstan.
A Full Proposal was approved by the SG in November 2005 subject to confirmation of co-funding of the project from other sources. Co-funding was confirmed in March 2006.
The project has been successfully completed. 24 jobs were created / of which 17 are for the ex-weapon staff, 24/19 jobs were planned initially.
