CNCP projects in Ukraine

Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology

Commercialisation unit in the National Kharkov Intitute of Physics and Technologies

The need to establish effective links between external partners (the state, investors, business structures, industrial structures and so on) and opportunities within KIPT (research, technologies, services, knowledge) results from Ukraine’s transition from the planned to the market economy and from cuts in government funding. The Government is also pressing scientific organizations, in addition to their purely scientific work, to support the introduction of new technologies and generate commercial benefits from scientific and technical research.

In 2006, on the initiative of the leadership of KIPT and with financial assistance from CNCP and support from its specialists, a unit was set up to promote the commercialisation of the Institute’s scientific and technical results. The Unit began work by examining the opportunities before it and by studying the experience of British scientists in commercialising science. Study tours to Great Britain organized by CNCP played a big role. These steps helped to launch practical work across a whole spectrum of activities: marketing, business planning, project management, attraction of investment, internal and external communications and training.

In 2008, the Commercialisation Unit and the KIPT patent research laboratory were reorganized into the TIDIS department. This department now encompasses 19 staff members, 20 business projects founded on the Institute’s own discoveries and about 70 examples of exploitable intellectual property. Shared resources consist of a data base of discoveries/services/skills and a web-site tidis.kipt.kharkov.ua . Eight seminars have been organized, together with training opportunities for Institute staff.

Thanks to CNCP, we have made decisive steps forward. KIPT projects realized in the framework of the Programme provide a sound foundation for developing collaboration and joint work between different divisions within the Institute, for discussions with customers, and for integration with the innovation infrastructure of Kharkov.
