Partnership between INP and the Oxford Nuclear Medicine Centre
The Institute of Nuclear Medicine (INP, Almaty) is currently implementing a government project to establish Kazakhstan’s first centre for nuclear medicine and biophysics. This will include a modern radiopharmaceuticals complex, which will make it possible to produce medical preparations in accordance with international requirements (GMP), and a medical complex for the delivery of all types of radiological diagnostics and treatment involving radioactive preparations. The Centre will also include a laboratory for testing radiopharmaceuticals, a radiation sterilisation building, and a hotel. According to the plan, some 7,000 diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving the use of radionuclides will be carried out each year, together with about 24,000 radionuclide analyses. In 2006, the CNCP Programme organized a fact-finding visit to Oxford as part of a project entitled «Support for the Establishment of a Centre of Nuclear Medicine in INP». This enabled leading specialists from INP to visit such well know medical and scientific organizations as the Radcliffe Infirmary and the Churchill Hospital. CNCP also organized a visit by Dr Soper, the head of the department for medical physics in the Churchill hospital, to INP. During this visit he provided exceptionally valuable comments on the proposed medical complex project and on the steps which were planned to be taken. I can sincerely say that the knowledge and experience obtained as a result of these activities enabled INP to prepare the technical and business case and the documentation setting out the estimates for the project and to successfully pass the government assessment. In 2008, INP's radio-chemical building was reconstructed – the first stage of the government project entitled «Centre for nuclear medicine and biophysics». In 2009, the second stage was started – the construction of the building for the production of radiopharmaceuticals. The completion of the construction of this building and the installation of the basic equipment, the cyclotron and the hot cells, are planned for 2010 year. Yevgenny Yermakov, |
