Get acquainted with Almaty
With some 1.3 million inhabitants, Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan, is the largest City in the country and is one of the most important political, industrial and cultural centres of the region. History According to archaeologists, the territory which is now Almaty was first settled in the 10-9th Centuries before our era. However, the modern City was only founded in 1854, when a decision was taken to build a fortress there. In 1867, this became the administrative centre of a region in the Governorate of Turkestan. The name Alma Ata appeared in 1921, and in 1927 the City became the capital of the Kazakh Autonomous Republic within the USSR. Thence it became the capital of independent Kazakhstan, a step which further stimulated development and construction within the City. In 1993, the name Alma Ata was officially changed to Almaty, which was derived from the ancient Kazakh name, which was first recorded as early as the thirteenth century. The Modern City Almaty is ringed by a chain of beautiful mountains, at the foot of which, at an altitude of 1,700 metres, is situated the World’s highest sport complex, Medeo. Many world records have been broken there. In the 1990s, Meteo hosted the “Voice of Asia” international music festival. In 1997, the capital of Kazakhstan was transferred to Astana by edict of the President of the Republic. However, with educational, scientific and cultural institutions concentrated there, Almaty remains the scientific, cultural, historical, industrial and business centre of the country. Indeed, Almaty is unofficially known as the Southern Capital, and in 1998 its special status was recognised in law. |
