A.Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory (Yerevan Institute of Physics)

The Institute was founded in 1942. Back in Soviet times it used to operate under the Ministry of Atomic Industry of the USSR. Aside from nuclear research, the institute focused on laser technologies. It employed 3,500 specialists.

Nowadays the main focus of the Institute includes elementaryparticles and nuclear physics. The Institute has one of the largest 6 GeV accelerators in the world, two high-altitude stations for space radiation studies, modern automated equipment, a computing centre and facilities for pilot production.

The Institute is carrying out large scale research in other areas, such as medical equipment, electronics, charged particles acceleration, laser systems, radiation technologies, and bio-technologies. Manufacture of nitrogen, oxygen and helium has been established.

The Institute presently employs 580 people, including 155 PhD specialists with 3 being members of the National Academy of Science of Armenia.

The Yerevan Institute of Physics is working closely with international centres of nuclear science and technology, such as CERN, DESY, CEBAF.
